How to Prime a Coil: Preventing Dry Hits

Vape and vape often. But vaping too much, we sometimes forget something. It’s always something. Then, after taking the foulest vape pull, we remember. We forgot to refill our vape. Priming a coil is the surefire go-to method when you initially fill your tank or even when your vape tastes a little dull. How to prime a coil is a method known by most vapers who fill their tanks.

What is Priming?

While we’re not referring to the leader of auto-bots, in a way – we’re transforming our coils. From a dry out-of-box component, priming will ensure that your vapor production is received as intended. The entire idea of priming is to ensure that the cotton is saturated enough before you vape.

Why should I prime?

Typically, priming refers to when you first install your coil. While it’s essential to prime for any refillable system, it’s critical for sub-ohm tanks. Not only do you receive the vapor as unintended, but you also destroy the coil before using it. Luckily, the process to prime a coil is straightforward. All you need are good habits and a little bit of patience.

How Do I Prime a Coil?

How to Prime a Coil
A relatively easy process. Priming a coil is an easy task where you saturate the coil to prevent dry hits and improve the longevity of your coils
Step 1: Attach the atomizer coil
Whether you have a new system or going for a head change, you can’t prime a coil without one. Pod systems come all-in-one with the coil and the e-liquid storage. On the other hand, sub-ohm tanks are a little different. While the tank comes along with the atomizer itself, you typically only change the coil. Nonetheless, we recommend attaching the coil to the base of the atomizer first.
Step 2: Saturate the Cotton
As this is the main idea of how to prime a coil, the entire concept is to saturate the cotton before filling your tank. The cotton does get soaked when submerged in the tank filled e-liquid. However, this is more of a proactive measure to ensure there are no dry spots.
Step 3: Take Dry Pulls
This step is generally pretty straightforward and is the same for all fillable devices. Without the pod/atomizer attached to a power source, take hits from the component as if you were regularly vaping. The idea of this step is to force the e-liquid through the atomizer and saturate the cotton.
Step 4: Warm It Up
As in anything you do, a nice little limber is always ideal. Warming up doesn’t necessarily apply to pod systems but is more focused on the variable wattage devices. As the wire generally expands when heated, it’s a good habit to warm it up before you vape at the full wattage desired. For variable wattage devices, with the cotton saturated, vape your device at a considerable less wattage.
Step 5: Hold Up (Optional)
It’s essential to take these proactive measures to ensure the quality of your vapor is as intended. However, we also recommend a little patience. After all the steps are complete, waiting for 5 – 10 mins is the ultimate solution to ensure your vape device is ready.

Finding the Optimal Prime

How to prime a coil is different for all the different types of vapes. Nonetheless, with each device being subject to the same components, we can safeguard our best vaping experiences with these proactive measures.

Preventing Burnt Hits

Regardless of your preference in nicotine strengths or your favorite e-liquid flavor, taking a dry hit is something we all can’t get behind. By priming your coil, even if your vape is tasting a little dull, we can prevent burnt cotton – which tastes non-ideal.

Ensure Flavor Quality

The best benefit of how to prime a coil is the quality of the flavor. With even a little dry hit, you will notice the taste can alter significantly. Differing taste form the flavor profile is far from ideal, and we may all know that dreaded taste.

Improving Coil Life

As mentioned before, burning your coil can alter the taste and destroy your coil. Not only are you subject to a modified vaping experience, but once your coil burns, you’re going to have to replace it.

Whether you prefer the alluring fruity e-liquids or the decadence in sweet e-liquids, that dreaded charred taste is something that none of us like. Assuring vapor is received how it’s intended is as easy as a few steps. By maintaining good vaping habits, we ensure the quality of the vape experience and sustain vape safety.
